Vietnam has successfully exported its first batch of sashimi-grade tilapia to Japan, marking a significant breakthrough for the country’s seafood industry and opening the door to one of the world’s most demanding seafood markets. The achievement demonstrates Vietnam’s growing ability to produce premium seafood products that meet Japan’s stringent requirements for food safety, quality, and traceability.

The shipment was completed by Vietnam Clean Seafood Corporation in Can Tho after extensive investment in aquaculture, processing technology, and quality management. According to the company, the products have received positive feedback from Japanese buyers for their freshness and taste, creating opportunities to further expand exports to other high-value markets, including the United States and Canada.
Japan is widely regarded as one of the most challenging export destinations for seafood, particularly for products intended for raw consumption. Successfully entering this market highlights Vietnam’s improving production capabilities and strengthens confidence in the country’s seafood industry as demand for premium whitefish continues to grow worldwide.

The achievement also comes as Vietnam’s tilapia industry continues to gain momentum. During the first five months of 2026, the country’s tilapia exports reached USD 62 million, more than doubling compared with the same period last year. Industry experts believe the Japanese market will help diversify export destinations while increasing demand for higher value-added seafood products.

For the maritime industry, exporting premium seafood requires more than simply transporting cargo. Maintaining reliable shipping schedules, preserving product quality throughout the cold chain, and ensuring timely delivery are all essential to meeting the expectations of international buyers. As Vietnam continues to expand its seafood exports, dependable ocean freight services will remain a key factor in supporting the country’s long-term export growth.
