Vietnam Trade Continues to Grow as the U.S., China and Europe Drive Exports While Machinery Imports Rise

Vietnam’s exports and imports continued to expand during the first eight months of 2026, with major markets including the United States, China, the European Union, South Korea and ASEAN remaining key drivers of export growth. On the import side, demand for machinery, equipment, raw materials and production components continued to increase.

Data from the Vietnam Customs authority reflects continued momentum in international trade, with further support expected toward the end of the year as consumer demand and production activity enter the peak season.

Major Markets Continue to Drive Vietnam’s Export Growth

Vietnam’s exports continued to grow across several key markets, with the United States remaining the country’s most important export destination, followed by China, the European Union, South Korea and ASEAN.

Beyond these major markets, destinations such as Hong Kong, Mexico and Canada also recorded strong export growth. This reflects the expansion of Vietnam’s export base and efforts to diversify trade across a broader range of markets.

Growth across multiple regions also highlights continued global demand for Vietnamese products, particularly goods linked to manufacturing, industrial production and consumer markets.

The U.S. and China Remain Central to Vietnam Trade

The United States remains a major destination for Vietnamese exports, while China plays an important role as both an export market and a key source of imports.

Vietnam’s exports to China continued to expand, while imports from China remained substantial as the country continues to supply machinery, equipment, raw materials and components used in Vietnam’s manufacturing sector.

Trade ties with China therefore remain important to exports, production networks and supply chains across Vietnam.

Rising Imports Reflect Strong Manufacturing Demand

Vietnam’s imports also continued to expand, driven mainly by demand for machinery, equipment, raw materials and industrial components.

The trend reflects ongoing manufacturing activity and the need to secure production inputs for both domestic and international orders.

In addition to China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the United States and ASEAN remain important sources of imports for Vietnam’s industrial sector, particularly for technology products, machinery and manufacturing components.

Middle Eastern Import Markets Show Shifting Trends

Import activity from the Middle East has also seen notable changes. While imports from some countries declined, imports from the United Arab Emirates and Oman increased significantly.

These shifts reflect changes in Vietnam’s sourcing patterns for goods and raw materials and could create opportunities for businesses in trade and logistics seeking to expand their networks across the Middle East.

Vietnam Trade Expected to Remain Active Toward Year-End

During the final months of the year, Vietnam’s import and export activity is expected to remain strong, supported by the peak consumer season and rising demand for goods.

Manufacturing is likely to benefit from higher orders and preparation for the year-end peak season, supporting demand for international transportation, port services and logistics.

For importers and exporters, preparing supply chains, customs clearance, warehousing and transportation capacity will become increasingly important as trade volumes rise toward the end of the year.

Faster Import Growth Puts Pressure on Vietnam’s Trade Balance

Although Vietnam’s international trade continues to expand, imports are growing faster than exports, which could contribute to a continued trade deficit.

Strong imports of capital goods, machinery and production materials can reflect increased investment and manufacturing activity. At the same time, the trend highlights the need to balance industrial expansion with dependence on imported inputs.

Outlook for Vietnam Trade

Overall, the first eight months of 2026 show that Vietnam trade continues to be supported by strong demand across major export markets, including the United States, China, Europe, South Korea and ASEAN.

Meanwhile, imports are being driven by demand for machinery, equipment and raw materials needed for production.

The final months of the year will therefore remain an important period for Vietnam’s trade and logistics sectors. Businesses should closely monitor import and export trends, international markets and supply chain conditions to prepare for higher trade volumes and continued changes in the global trading environment.
